What is DVD?
DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disk. It is a video storage format. VHS is the current consumer video storage format. A DVD is similar to a CD (compact disc).

Why DVD?
DVDs have many advantages over VHS tapes when it comes to video storage.

  • Size-DVDs are considerably smaller than VHS tapes which take less space
    to store.
  • Capacity-DVDs can store more video information on a single disk than a
VHS tape. It can also store about 20,000 novels or about 100,000 still
    photos from a digital camera.
  • Durability-There are no moving parts to break on a DVD. VHS tape tends
to stick to itself over time if not viewed.
  • Ease of Use-You don't have to remember to rewind them
  • Longevity-DVD is the first format that will truly last a lifetime provided you
don't scratch the surface and you store and handle it correctly. VHS tape
longevity, at best, is only about 5-7 years if properly cared for.
  • Quality-DVD has 480 lines of resolution versus only 200-300 lines on VHS. This means that your picture is sharper, more detailed and vivid. The image will be just as good in ten years as it is now, unlike VHS. DVD also had CD sound quality.

How did DVD come about?
A worldwide consortium called the DVD Forum established the format. The DVD Forum is made up of hardware manufacturers, software developers, designers and engineers. These people collaborated to establish a unified set of specifications that is becoming the globally accepted standard for manufacturers of disks and players.
