Local Filmmaker
Wins International Festival Award
(Mooresville, NC) —February 5, 2009
“Nobody
Listens”, written by Martin Ciliberto of Rochester, NY and produced and directed
by local filmmaker Tim Vogel, was chosen as a Silver Ace Award winner at the
2009 Las Vegas International Film Festival. Only a maximum of 20 films in each
competitive category are chosen to be honored with this prestigious recognition.
The festival’s judges felt that the film demonstrated superior and standout
filmmaking and is deserving of special recognition. “Nobody Listens” was among
the best of nearly 2000 films submitted from over 50 countries around the world.
Filmed entirely at the Hampton Inn in Mooresville, of late March 2008, Vogel
assembled an extremely small crew and cast to shoot the short film in just a day
and a half.
The film, "Nobody Listens", is a short story about John, a very successful
forty-something businessman who is frustrated with his family, friends and
co-workers who just don't listen to what he is saying. John hires a high-class
escort named Linda just to have somebody who will listen to him.
This
screenplay, written by Martin Ciliberto, was originally sent to a director in
New York City for production. The director turned it down, saying "it was too
much of an actor's piece."
“His loss was our gain” said Vogel. Ciliberto, originally gave the script to
another director. Vogel went on to say “At one point, I had it in my hands, and
I wanted to do it badly.” The first director eventually decided he didn’t want
to the script so Ciliberto offered it to Vogel.
Five-time Emmy-winning Director of Photography, Jeff “Boomer” Alred called the
filming experience, “a true independent, rebel-without-a-crew sort of thing.”
The film’s star, Eric Cover of Asheville said about his character, “I’m an
idiot, but I’m nice”. Cover has had principal roles in Raise the Bar’s
production of “A Dance for Bethany,” in which he played an abusive, desperate
father, and the Foundry Pictures film “Wesley” in which he portrayed a lovable
British miner. “There is actually character development in this,” Cover said
before the scene. “It’s awesome. I’ve done a lot of theater. This is a neat
opportunity.”
Cover’s co-star Michelle Smith of Durham said her first film experience was for
Scorpio Pictures in the film “The Lost Stallions.”
This film is not a stranger to awards. In mid 2008 the film was awarded an
Honorable Mention in the Accolade Competition.
According to Thomas Baker, Ph.D., Coordinator of The Accolade Competition,
‘"Nobody Listens” is a study in human nature. While it would make brilliant
fodder in couple’s therapy and in psychology classes, it should be required
viewing for virtually every person on the planet. The best movies are always
about character development and storytelling; this film is good at both. This
visually attractive, carefully crafted film gets to the core of self-absorption.
It’s an audience-pleasing film that stands-out and deserves wide distribution."
Vogel has been invited to accept the award in person at the Closing Night Awards
Ceremony in Las Vegas' on April 12th.
